Quarry Aisle

County Road 36 between Buckhorn and Bobcaygeon is known as Quarry Aisle, because it is an area rich in limestone. This is our Quarry Aisle or Quarry Column. As we have information on local quarry development, we will publish it here.

Proposed 190 Square Kilometres Graphite Mine in Bobcaygeon

Yes, you read that right, it's kilometres, not acres.

The proposed graphite mine in Bobcaygeon was a hot topic at the municipal all-candidates meeting on September 22nd, as was the proposed mega quarry. As we await an OMB hearing ruling on the mega quarry, we realize, we ain't seen nothing yet!

Valterra Resource Corporation owns property in the Bobcaygeon area, that extends 190 square kilometres from Bass Lake, through Crystal Lake to Salerno Creek in our township, and they are in the process of evaluating the property. The results have been very good for them, but not so good for our area. This could end up being one of the largest graphite mines in the world. The first discovery for graphite on the Bobcaygeon property was in 2003 during a trenching program focusing on other commodities.

Aggregate Secondary Plan

The City of Kawartha Lakes invited residents to review the final draft version of its plans for the long term protection and management of sand, gravel and bedrock (aggregate) resources within the municipality.

The purpose of the Secondary Plan is to protect and manage the City’s aggregate resources while still ensuring that environmental and social values are recognized and protected throughout the aggregate extraction and transportation process. The secondary plan focuses on policies and mapping that identifies and manages aggregate resource areas, haul routes and environmental and social features.

Copies of the Secondary Plan and related documents are available on the City’s website.
